How does the new electricity tariff work?

The cost of energy varies according to the time of day, so the difference in price from one section to another can vary over time. On the net you can find a lot of information, but surely it generates the big question: Which time slot is the cheapest?

Finally, the cost prices for each time slot are as follows:

  • Low cost: 0.11484 € / kWh
  • Flat cost: 0.15289 € / kWh
  • Peak cost: 0,24262 € / kWh

And you can’t get too far off track, since from one day to the next, during peak hours there has been a 41% increase in the cost of electricity.

How is the price of electricity calculated?

The price of electricity is based on four fundamental aspects: the cost of energy, transport and distribution tolls, taxes and infrastructure charges (adding the profit margins of the company that markets it).

In this new tariff the part of taxes and charges does not change, but there are modifications in the tolls and distribution.

When does this new tariff come into force?

This new tariff is called 2.0TD and is valid for all domestic customers and small businesses with a contracted power of less than 15kW. The new electricity tariff comes into force on Tuesday, June 1st.

This new tariff seeks to encourage a more efficient consumption by consumers and a change of habits. The final amount of the bill will depend more on when it is consumed and not on how much.

How can I pay less?

By looking at the clock before putting on the washing machine or dishwasher. To achieve significant reductions in your electricity bill, you will have to change your consumption habits.

For example, running the washing machine at the cheapest times can save between 40 and 50 euros a year. Therefore, if this rule is transferred to the rest of the household appliances, it allows us to save by being very efficient.

What are the most expensive hours of light?

There will be three power periods, that is, the day will be divided into three strips. The charges that will be paid in each band are different, therefore, everything that uses electricity during peak hours will make the electricity bill more expensive.

  • Peak hours. These are the most expensive. They apply to working days from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
  • Flat hours, a little cheaper. They apply to working days from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to midnight.
  • Low hours, the cheapest. They apply on weekdays from 0.00 a.m. to 8.00 a.m. and also on all weekends and public holidays.

One of the other factors to consider in order to save on your electricity bill is to check the power you have contracted, optimize it and adapt it to your needs.

What are the most energy-consuming appliances in the home?

Half of a home’s electricity consumption is caused by household appliances. With this new electricity bill, it is important to take this into account in order to save money and energy:

  • Refrigerator: between 20% and 30% of the overall consumption of household appliances. It is the only thing that cannot be turned off, therefore, it is necessary to invest in an energy efficient refrigerator.
  • Washing machine: it consumes 12% of electricity and water. Since it only consumes electricity when we turn it on, it is a good machine to use on weekends or during the low consumption hours of the new tariff.
  • Dryer: it is also one of the machines that consumes the most electricity. Therefore, whenever possible, it is advisable to spread out the clothes.
  • TV: it is not one of the appliances that consume the most, but it is one of those that we have on all day and this can end up affecting energy consumption considerably.

With all the doubts solved about how the new electricity bill affects, saving energy and money, only depends on you!
